Dr. William A. White,
Superintendent, St. Elizabeths Hospital,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Dr. White:
The Office is in receipt of the report of the survey of the asylum for the use of insane Indians at Canton, South Dakota, and made by Dr. Samuel A. Silk, member of the medical staff of Saint Elizabeths.
This report, together with reports received from the District Medical Director, indicate the situation with reference to the Canton Asylum which is in very great need of correction both in the physical aspects of the institution, its personnel and management.
In connection with these reports the Indian Office would appreciate the services of the Saint Elizabeths’ staff in determining the best solution of the situation at Canton Asylum. The Indian Office would be glad to have Dr. Guthrie of the Medical Division consult with Dr. Silk and yourself regarding this matter, and if this meets with your approval, arrangements will be made for such meeting by telephone between the Medical Division of the Indian Office and your office.
Sincerely yours,
Charles H. Burke
Commissioner.
